Held at Budworth Sailing Club over the weekend of 3031st August, light winds meant the race officer decided to use whatever wind was there on the Saturday to get 3 races in. With a convincing win in all 3 races, Ian Platt was overnight leader and could not be beaten. Sunday morning and the fleet woke up to a mirror sheen on Budworth Mere and racing was postponed. A gusty 23 eventually arrived in the afternoon and Race 4 got underway. Paul Owen and Andy Hateley managed 3rd overall also using Speed Sails hull and sails. New to the Phantom Class it was completely unknown how he was going to get on in the 62 strong fleet.. After 2 days of strong winds and racing abandoned, the Phantom fleet finally managed to get out on the Sunday morning at 8.30am to try and make sure they got 4 races in. The wind did not hold up, in factit increased as the day went on. 4 races were planned and 4 races were sailed. Going into the last race Jim Hunt, Andy Couch, Andy Davis and Lawrence Crispin were all in the running. A consistant set of results saw Andy Davis finish 3rd overall using the recently developed Speed Sails Phantom Sail. Merlin Victory for Speed SailsRoger Gilbert and James Stewart have made it 2 years in a row as Merlin Rocket national champions using Speed Sails With 4 bullets out of 7 races sailed and discarding a 4th, Roger Gilbert crewed by James Stewart put in a convincing win for Speed Sails. Absolutely fantastic boat speed meant these two could just not be beaten. After winning Merlin Salcombe Week earlier in the year Andy Taxi Davis had high hopes going into the Merlin Nationals. Speed Sails Andy Davis crewed by Ellie Bremer put in a consistant set of results and managed to stay in second position most of the week. Going into the last day 2 points clear of 3rd, it wasnt meant to be and a disapointing 12th and 8th meant they dropped down to 4th place overall. Still a fantastic result in a fleet of 78 Merlins. After a week of predominantly light conditions Tom amp; Andy counted 3 firsts, a second and a fourth as they finished 2 points clear of former champions John Mursell amp; Nick Keast. The full results can be found here. Over the winter the class voted in favour of new laminate mainsails in order to keep up development within the class and also to try and increase the competitive lifespan of the sails. Tom amp; Andy used a set of sails made at the beginning of the year suggesting that the cut and cloth used on the Speed Scorpion sails is not only exceptionally quick but has also increased the competitive lifespan of the sails. Despite the light conditions and carrying several stone more than the recommended total in the boat the pair were able to outpoint most of the fleet and still maintain boat speed through the chop. In the windiest race of the week, which had to be abandoned half way round, they established a comfortable lead showing the sails can perform in the breeze as well. Speed win Merlin Salcombe weekSpeed Sails Gill race team sailors Andy Davis and Ellie Bremer put in a convincing display to win Merlin Rocket Salcombe Week with a race to spare. This is the 2nd time in 2 years a set of Speed Merlin Rocket sails has dominated in such a fashion after Roger Gilbert and Matt Mee achieved the same feat last year. With a capacity 100 boats competing each year and a waiting list for entries Merlin Rocket Salcombe Week is one of the most popular events in the st1:countryregionst1:placeUKst1:placest1:countryregion. Despite splitting into flights the racing in the confined waters of Salcombe estuary is extremely close. Andy and Ellie finished with 4 wins and a 2nd from their 5 races showing excellent boat speed, especially upwind. They used the latest GPL00 main, RS4 jib and Dynakote spinnaker. As well as Salcombe Week, Speed Merlin Rocket sails have already claimed victory at the 2008 Inland Championship and hold the top 2 positions in the 2008 Silver Tiller series with Roger Gilbert and James Stewart leading on 7.3 points from Matt Biggs and Rob Kennaugh just behind on 8.2 points. GP14 Worlds 2008Entries for the GP14 World Championship 2008 to be held in Abersoch, North Wales have now hit 110. Amongst the latest to enter are former Endeavour Trophy Champion of Champions, and one of the most successful GP14 pairings of all time, Richard Estaugh and Simon Potts, alongside the well known and also very successful dinghy sailor himself a former Champion of Champions Jim Hunt, crewed by Andy Service.RichardNo.8217;s record in the GP14 is impressive. He has won no less than 6 World, 12 National and 11 Inland Championships Back together with Simon for the first time since their 2007 Nationals win, this team will no doubt be pushing for another podium finish. However, it will not be an easy challenge. This event will also see current GP14 World Champions Ian Dobson and Andy Tunnicliffe seek to defend their title, 2003 World Champions Neil Marsden and Derek Hill team up again to repeat the success they enjoyed in Abersoch that year and current Fireball World Champion Matt Mee looking to add another World Championship to his growing list of honours, which already include a GP14 National Championship. There are many others too, including Carl Jeffs and Jim Toothill who will again be hoping to capture the major title that still alludes them.Elsewhere, there will be the inevitable fight for silver and bronze fleet prizes and special trophies, which feature as much in the postrace bar talk as any other. And as if this high level of competition throughout the fleet and the prospect of racing against 109 other boats was not enough to entice people, Championship Chairman Ian Sinclair and his team, together with South Caernarvonshire Yacht Club are working tirelessly to ensure a great time off the water as well, with live bands, hog roasts and much moreWe look forward to seeing you Speed Enterprises at the Inland Championship Speed Enterprises once again showed why they are the boat to beat with 3 out of the top 4 at the recent Enterprise Inland Championships using a Speed FRP hull. 51 boats competed in the event which saw winds ranging fromF1 up to F4. defending World and National Champions Nick Craig and Toby Lewis ran out eventual winners ahead of Tim Sadler amp; Richard Sault and Richie Adams amp; Martin Weatherspoon.
